Following the surprising news that Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo recently welcomed a son, a new report claims the baby was conceived by a surrogate mother.
Despite conflicting reports that the pregnancy was the result of a fling, Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias says Ronaldo’s baby boy was conceived with the help of a surrogate at the end of last summer in San Diego, according to the Daily Mail.
The soccer stud reportedly learned of his son’s June 17 birth while competing in the World Cup in South Africa, and flew to meet the baby following Portugal’s elimination from the tournament.
Ronaldo, 25, took to his official website, Facebook and Twitter accounts over the weekend to announce his excitement at becoming a first-time father.
"It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy," he wrote. "As agreed with the baby’s mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship."
A spokesman for Ronaldo's management company, Gestifute, confirmed he had become a father but refused to comment on the surrogacy claims, according to the Daily Mail.
While the unidentified mother remains out of the picture, one woman who continues to be a presence in the soccer star’s life is Russian model Irina Shayk.
One day after Ronaldo made his shocking announcement, the new couple was spotted having lunch together in Manhattan.
Though reports claimed Shayk, 24, was devastated to learn about the child, her rep denies any such friction between the duo.
"They're trying to create a relationship," the spokesman said.
